Pre-RISC background to the Clifden Road Campaign
May 2010:
- The Conservative Party took control of Richmond Council. One of their 13 election pledges on education was to “work for a Catholic secondary school”, as although there were several nearby, there wasn’t one in the Borough itself. The local Catholic Community had been campaigning for one for many years.
Dec 2010:
- Richmond Council issued a White Paper stating that “two secondary schools (including one Roman Catholic) will be needed by about 2015 to meet the demand for places ”, which led to public criticism from the leader of the local Humanist group, Jeremy Rodell.
March 2011:
- Local church leaders and the Catholic community backed the Catholic School plan.
- However, momentum against the proposals also started to build in the local press and social media
